In previous tech tree builds there was one research for the ship class and two for enhanced versions of the hull, and now I can only find one.

Where is the second enhancement research located at?

It is an either-or choice now. Researching one precludes researching the other.

Which feels very arbitrary but interesting on a gameplay standpoint.

However, it would be fair to unlock a new hull by researching only its enhanced version, without having to research the base one.

In all seriousness, I haven't the foggiest idea.

Is there someone official I can ask about this, to get a hard answer on?

Are you sure you're not misremembering the tech tree? Even way back on update 1 before the change to the current system there has been always been two techs for each ship classes: one to unlock them, another to increase their manpower and unlock more slots on the ship. I do not believe there was even a upgrade 2 for any ships types way back on update 1.

no I am very sure about it, using united empire as my meter stick here, you needed a second upgrade unlock to fit all the weapon hardpoints.

I will start another game in this update period, playing as UE, and will take pictures of the finished ship upgrades, just to be sure.

I can confirm that we always had only 1 Ship Upgrade per Hull:

- 1 for each Small hull

- 1 for each Medium hull

- 1 for the Large hull

Well,  there is one exception: the Ark which has two upgrades :)

From update 2, the upgrades of Small hull are mutually exclusive, and same for the Medium Hull. The excluded option can still be acquired through diplomacy if another empire is using the same faction and took the other one.

Love this. Was always my favourite thing to do in Galactic Civilizations III as well. Find a buddy, trade the exclusive techs to eachother, annihilate everyone too stupid to do the same.

ok that is all the endgame mounting,  and can be shown there are guns missing from these ships.

They are clearly supposed to be more armed than they are.
