I am playing on large with 5 competitors.  For the most part normal settings.   I have gotten several games where I am either right next door to another major faction or 1 system is between us.   I don't mind being close but that seems extreme.   Just wondering if that is working as intended? Its happened on ring, twin elliptical and ovoid galaxies.  The only change I have made is system density( I increased the amount of systems on a map which I would think would make it less likely to spawn close.  

I had that with a Vodyani game, four arm galaxy, with 5 competitors.  I ended up with Sophons like a system or two away, literally in the same constellation.

Stick to the Ovoid galaxy shape, to my knowledge, it is the one with the most balanced starts. If you increase system density, might as well try and set the number of constellations to "many" (this can be tricky with other settings in the current galaxy generation).

we are working on better spawning empires. You should see an improvement at release. the whole generation system will be much improved.

Actually all my games started with someone near, so it end on a knife fight until one of the side is subdued one way or another.

I cant speak of features os the galaxy as all that is possible to be set on random and caotic is set as such.
