what is that?i am hoping its some kind of late game threat similar to stellaris, or better than that
on a side note, can we add serbia as a 9th faction?
It seems to be a sort of overarching quest that ties the questlines of individual factions with that of the Academy.
I haven't finished all of the available faction quests as of the last update, but --[SPOILERS]--

the later part of the Vodyani questline involves finding the Academy, conquering it, and installing an 'ideologically pure' new Vodyani-controlled Academy in its place, which I assume is part of the 'bad end' of the game's plot options. If you've browsed other threads in this forum, you can see a video that's been compiled by diligent data-scourers who've been looking through E.N.F.E.R. stuff to find hidden video clips, images and suchforth. A link to the (currently incomplete) video:
, which seems to indicate that the leader of the Academy is the 'Heretic' that is spoken of in the Vodyani questline, who was trying to actually enlighten the people of the galaxy, rather than subject them to the predations of the Vodyani's Church.
Anyways, hints throughout videos and other faction questlines make it appear that the late-game threat will take the form of an Endless (or group of Endless, or something similar?) trying to regain control of the galaxy by manipulating various factions.
But that's all just speculation - maybe not even the Devs know how the endgame plot will turn out!

The Academy is where you hire your heroes that serve you by commanding a fleet or becoming governors... However, the Academy is a singular and neutral institution that is in contact with all factions, offering heroes from all factions too. But all these heroes have one thing in common: they are all affected by Dust. You just have to read their bios: mostly had a normal life and then... Dust exposure, skill enhancements, some even gained self-awareness if they came from hive mind species. And then they joined the Academy.
The Academy is only interested in Dust enhanced heroes and they're making their best to give then to all factions, making all these factions indirectly dependent on Dust for their expansion. Their secret agenda can be galactic conquest by hitting all factions on their back with some Dust alteration or... serving the demon(s) from the video, it seems at least they know the demon(s) exist(s).
