I have been attacked by some faction right out of the blue. I click on fight nothing happens. I click retreat and I get a warning that I have no escape route, and I am not able to end my turn. So WTF gives? Anyone experience this?

You can't end your turn if there's a battle to resolve. If you can't retreat due to reasons explained, then fighting and losing is your only option.
