I'm almost only playing Vodyani too, and the first thing I do is always to explore what is next to me. Don't hesitate to send the 2 probes from the Wheel you start with into the lanes, and leave the wheel on the home system, this will allow you to explore a lot faster than directly with the ship (probes moves faster, and ignore lanes).

40 essence per turn, you'll get your second ark 13 turns later with 0 essence leech.

You can switch the design back to other modules, and restore weapons/armor once you are able to leech from someone if you want to.

Thank god for that passive 10 essences module. Sometime it worth to push out second Ark fast.
