Steam spy says it has only sold 170000 copies so far which is not great for a game with a high budget..Will the game be getting long term support if the first expansion does not improve this situation.

Steam Spy isn't super accurate. Plus, last I saw, it was much closer to 200k (~198k).

Not to mention, Amplitude's 4X games are slow burners. Endless Legend did not sell well its first 8-9 months, but it received decent word of mouth and awesome support, which eventually led to pretty great sales.

I'd imagine that we'll see this game supported regardless of sales in hopes of the good word of mouth getting even better and leading to many more sales.

Yeah but Sega run the show now. They will not support a game making a loss.

SEGA also knew what company they were buying.

I'd leave speculation on business models to the devs. They are clearly still supporting the game, and plans are clearly in the works for future free and paid content based on their comments. Let's wait and see!

Games like these usually don't get much from the very start, and slowly gains more popularity as the game grows with DLCs and expansions. The more content the game has, the more people will buy it and the more people will hear from it as well. Especially when there's reviews coming about with these big content jumps.

I hope Amplitude doesn't go the way of Paradox, milking a game for years with game-breaking DLCs.

My view is that it is currently a very crowded space 4x market, but a lot of these are pretty mediocre and very me-too, not innovating much and not learning from the three and a half decades of development of these games.  Having been playing them since then, and having picked up some of the recent batch and found them disappointing, I feel ES2 (which I just bought) has the potential to be a landmark game in the genre once it gets its bugs shaken out and builds on its strengths with a couple of innovative DLCs.  Hopefully its class will eventually let it be heard above the noise.

I'm just glad that it isn't as overcrowded as the arena FPS market

I agree!

I agree that the 4x space market is crowded, but at the same time it feels underserved as well. I feel like 4x games have become a series of check boxes and lack focus. Actually it may be more that the developers lack the courage to focus on the key aspects of what they're good at and have a handle on, while deprecating the things that are not critical to their particular experience.

This is where the mediocrity comes in. Having espionage just because, or having tech trading just because, or having a galactic council just because etc. leads to everything having the same feel and often times being unsatisfying to play. This is because players who value feature X over feature Y are unhappy that it hasn't gotten the development they think it deserved or isn't complex enough to satisfy their perception of its importance to the game.

When you combine the above with the fact that space 4x games have traditionally gotten very limited budgets or are built with very small teams with limited skillsets, you begin to see how the current market came about. Numerous titles, but with nowhere near enough focus or development resources to make most of them stand out.

ES2 is a pretty good 4X currently but after >250 hours in, it is "soon" time for a big ADD-ON, paid or otherwise. ;)

Case in point, Ashberry. It's saying possibly over 200k now. And 200k isn't that bad, to be honest. The Endless games are slow burns and I think it will eventually get to 500k +

While I won't get into the specifics of our plans for the game and I will not comment on the accuracy of Steam Spy (a great tool, but a lot better at showing stats for a game that's a few years old rather than a recent release), we're happy with Endless Space 2 sales.

We've got great content planned, and our policy of supporting our games after released hasn't changed. It is one of the tenets of Amplitude to offer strong post-release support to ensure that buying one of our games means that this game will just keep getting better, whether or not you invest in expansions and content packs, because of the free updates we release.

That's also the plan for Endless Space 2. We've got cool stuff coming up, and I have no doubt you'll love it when you get your hands on it. :)

The teasing...give us something to work with! One tiny hint!
