Imho the main reason why 4x is becoming more popular is that it is becoming more "cool". Previously, it was rather shunned by large selections of the gaming community (often because folks had just never tried it), but now it's become more popular, I can see it getting bigger and bigger. This will be very good news for all 4x gamers.
