I have a lot of doubts from the Horatio ending in ES2.

[SPOILERS]

So "Four" manages to take Horatio Prime´s place from the beginning and we play as him.

Then we gain the hero "Five" and we later discover that "Five" is in fact Prime himself plotting against you.

So the final quest is to execute Horatio Prime.

And the ending is this: "Ah. Home again. It seems ages since all this madness began. Clones, clown and curiosities have been relentlessly bothersome. But I sit once again in my palace, drinking my wine from my goblets. The beautification shall continue, for the good of the galaxy. Horatio is back, and here to stay."

It totally feels like Prime managed to get the upper hand at the final moment, because of all these "I'm back" references, but it is never explained directly. Was that your impression too?

I also veryfied that "Five" hero, who is supposed to be Prime, stays alive and is still playable after the quest.

That is also a strong support that Prime survived, and if it is true, that would be the first case in Amplitude 4X games where, after completing the final quest, you become a new faction leader and also a hero at the same time, planning an empire and, if you wish, participating directly at some space battles.

Or maybe Prime managed to convince Four he is Five to strike him down.

Quick quesion: How do we know some Horatio clones aren't (self-)indoctrinated to believe they are Prime?

It wouldn't be much of a stretch to believe that Five is so narcissistic and selfish that he sees all of those things as his.

Well, maybe ALL Horatio clones are narcissistic enough to believe they are Prime. Maybe the quest was just a normal day at Horatioland and they stab each other on a daily basis believing they are retaking their rightful throne from a copycat.

I'm pretty sure they are all just very confused, not only about who everyone else is, but also who they are. Not really suprising. Horatio was already a little unhinged even before making a whole lot of equally unhinged versions of himself. It's not entirely clear from chapter to chapter who is actually narrating. I think we can be sure that the first chapter is Four, and the last sub chapter is Prime. For everything inbetween, who knows? But I wouldn't mind hearing some theories on who's who in each.

EDIT

SPOILERS

IIRC, there is one route in the quest line (if you take the industry route) where you actually kill Five. This still allows for the ending where Prime lives. So I don't think it be the case, against first impressions, that Five is Prime. Who ever is narrating that bit is confused about identities. I might not quite be remembering that right though, as I don't often go down the industry path.

My takeaway from the main quest was that the main clones mostly all know who they are. they talk about overthorwing prime at times during the quest, meaning they know if they are prime or not. they all just want power and don't care if it means overthrowing Prime to get it.
