Upgradable hero ships, they start in their current ship and as you unlock technologies you can put them in bigger and better ships. I hate getting to that stage in the game where all my fleets are dreadnoughts and my hero "leading" the fleet is in a flimsy ship that gets shot down in a few seconds. Because of this I very rarely recruit heroes for combat.
Buffing trade and bringing it back to 75 percent of what it used to be would be wonderful. Making scientific victory more difficult by locking the endless techs until you have x3 or tier five techs and only the science idieology can reseach them would be nice too.
I would like to see improved diplomacy with the AI.
Right now diplomacy is stupid and useless. It does not make sense.
For instance, if you meet an opponent right away, you cant even make peace, while there is no reason to not be at peace. Later in the game, when you are more powerful, have way more influence, you also cant make peace, even if this is in the interest of the AI. The only way the AI ever wants peace, is if you give them ALL your money. It is idiotic. It is easier to declare war, and steamroll your opponent. This is no fun.
Without improvements in diplomacy with the AI, and just regular more sensible behaviour of the AI, these games become really boring really fast, and there is really no incentive to be interested in future games from this developer.
Improving diplomacy would really deepen the game and open up more playstyles in my opinion.
Edit: Amplitude already makes beautiful 4x games, great art, nice factions etc. There are no gains to be made there. The AI is where the most is to be gained, for this game, and future games. This would elevate good games to great games.
An unrealistic wish would be fore Auriga to spawn with a unique minor faction based off the Endless Legend factions.

My wishful dream, my heart's desire would be a Vodyani overhaul, one that reflects the intention of a fleet-based faction. I don't want to build on the planet if I have this Death Star shaming pyramid in orbit. I want each ship to have its own crew for population and upgrades for buildings, and a few planetary buildings like remotely operated radars and such. I don't want to waste my time with building separate Leech fleets, nor to make another fleet to guard them. I want all my ships to be able to gather Essence, depending on its Manpower (1-5% of Manpower's worth of Essence per ship per turn or something), and I want to be able to enter into a special diplomatic relationship with Minor Factions that gets me Essence without me having to park a fleet there, while also allowing the given Faction to grow (it could even replace the Assist option). I don't want to grow Food on the planets I'm anchoring on, I want to convert said Food to Essence at a certain rate (imagine a cattle ranch but with people), and by extension I don't want to rely on getting lucky with neighbouring Minor Factions, I want to be able to harvest Food to gain a smaller fraction of Essence than I would if I anchored an Ark there. I don't want to deal with planet-type based Approval, I want my not!Catholic vampires to base their opinion of me on my Essence rationing policy. I don't want my Arks to have or be influenced by spheres of Influence, they move where they wish, when they wish, along with any Trade Routes linked to them.

Another thing that should be considered is the use of food resource and the technology and I'd like some other comments on this two. The final tech: chaotic meteorolgy, which gives you 20+ lunar and gas and also +10 per planet if you buy the satellites for 25 green. Has anyone ever used that?
In my regards, this tech should be changed in a way to make it more useful, as a late game tech it's not really that good, coz you're gonna use starports to populate planets and even if you'd get the satellites, the number of turn it takes to complete them is so large that the system is already overpopulatet when they're finished.

What would be cool, since I watched man of steel yesterday, is that there should be a new planet depletion mechanic, in which you can regulate the production on your planet. Overproducing on one planet should cause it too self destruct sooner or later, like in the movie man of steel, when krypton exploded.
Also, how about some easter eggs or cameo appearances, like the destroyed remains of krypton on one system, or a hidden system with the minor faction sayians that can transform into super sayians after some requirements are met :D .

Even though it'd be a lot of work, I think it would fit nicely with Isyander's all-consuming drive to pull whatever support he can for his cause. Especially since we already have an event quest where Isyander tells you to increase Minor Faction population across the galaxy.
I think an Espionage mechanic should be high on the list of things to add. I recently read on the forums people were saying there was no real way to tell what the AI was doing and now I think about it they are kind of right. It's really you just going towards your victory condition and maybe sometimes there will be a warning of an approaching economic victory or conquest victory for the AI, but you never have to change your plan to counter the AI as you just don't know what they are doing. So adding a way use an Espionage mechanic to find out what they were planning and countering it with your own tactics would add a new meta to the game.
I too would like an Espionage mechanic. Particularly I would like it to be an Intrigue resource spent on Operations, tied to Science like Manpower is tied to Food, so that Science heavy factions can hack everyone else and pull out surprise operations and actions. I find that that's a sensible way to make Science actually "do" something on its own to solve the "all bark and no bite" issue one otherwise runs into with Science not technically producing anything.
My unrealistic desire is to see the entire FIDSI system, and indeed tech tree, overhauled- new mechanics for housing to enable Food, a more direct formula for Trade Routes and domestic Dust, improved resource balancing over all. I miss a lot of things from Endless Legend regarding tech polish, as well as bring bothered by the wonkiness of many FIDSI since we don't divide population among resources like EL.
More realistically I would like the Academy to actually have a diplomacy screen with Isyander. I find it strange that this pinnacle of galactic diplomacy and power is non-interactive. It would be interesting if, in following with Isyander's intentions and attitude, all of the leftover Minor Factions joined up into a League of Independent Systems under the Academy when a certain portion of all Minor Factions have been absorbed, giving greater permananence, value, and contention to Minor Factions in the mid and late game.
Something that's been mentioned by others before, and I feel is a likely next feature: espionage. It'd add a lot of new elements and ways to cripple your enemy in a more subtle way than crashing their territory with a fleet. It'd also be quite useful to beat down more powerful players/AI who're ahead and might be winning, when you can't beat them straight up.
My less realistic wish is the ability to watch other player's/AI's battles which are within your own vision. I love the in-game battles despite its restrictions and I always feel it's such a waste when you can't watch battles other than your own, especially when you play multiplayer.
