Hello, I just got this game and I love it. The political parties let a democracy trully feel like a democracy, the story of sophons is great(my first faction), the AI is good enough to challenge me and the planet colonization movies really let you feel you are colonizing different planets. Game ha s alot of depth. Still have a lot to figure out,like ground combat, my sophon invasion of the pirate world was a disaster, but next time will I bring more men :)

There is lot of hidden info about how game mechanics work so don't hesitate to write any questions here.

You can soften up the planet's defenses with A2 Slugs(i think thats what they are called). Attach them to one of your support class ships. Early game for pirate bases having 2 support class ships with 1 A2 module on each is enough for pirate bases. You just have to sit on the pirate base and gaurd it and every turn it will lower their man power on the planet. Sit for like 3-5 turns and then invade. Done. :).  the A2 slugs tech is in the tier 2 military tech tree you will need 1 Titanium for each ship. good luck!.

That strategy is very efficient later in the game but for the first pirate lair it is not very good due to the fact that an upgraded fleet can spawn and your initial ships will have hard time dealing with it. and if you are forced to retreat than they will replenish their manpower in a blink of an eye. The first pirate lair can be efficiently defeated with your first combat fleet that contains 400 upgraded troops though.

I now defeated those pirates, I sieged them a little, I bough infantry upgrades and 2 fleet totalling 800 manpower, this crushed them in 2 turns :)

Good to know, just researched that tech :)

It depends on your Command Points (cp) cap and your fleets in defending system.

Examples:

You have 2 fleets and you have a total number of 10 Command Points (cp) per fleet available, yet.

1)

* 1st fleet has a total number of 3 attackers (1 cp each one = total of 3cp).

* 2nd fleet has 1 hunter (3cp), 2 attackers (1cp each one = total of 2cp) and 2 protectors (1 cp each one = 2cp).

Result: Enemy fleet will attack 2nd fleet, because it's the stronger fleet (total of 7cp instead of 1st fleet = 3cp total). The 1st fleet will merge with the 2nd fleet and join (defending!) battle this case -> because you can have up to 10 cp in one fleet.

2)

* 1st fleet has a total number of 4 attackers  (1 cp each one = total of 4cp).

* 2nd fleet has 1 hunter (3cp), 2 attackers (1cp each one = total of 2cp) and 2 protectors (1 cp each one = 2cp) like in example 1).

Result: Enemy fleet will attack 2nd fleet, because it's the stronger fleet (total of 7cp instead of 1st fleet = 4cp total). The 1st fleet won't merge and join (defending!) battle this case -> because you can have up to 10 cp in one fleet, only. In this example both fleets have a total of 11cp.

I hope I'm right and nothing has changed since last time I experienced this happen. Am I?

Thanks both for your answers, game has great community :)

No problem! :). I should have pointed out what mamarider brought up.  If you do decide to use the slugs for early pirate lairs you will need 2 offensive type ships with them. I usually have 2 offensive ships partnered with the 2 A2S slugs ships :). Makes a decent early game navy. Or just do as Mamarider said and get a fleet of 400 manpower and invade.  If you have any other questions feel free to ask.  People are great here and helpful.  Dont forget to boost your population with luxuries.  Go to the population screen and it tells you what luxury you need to boost your population. I believe it gives your population type 100% boost for their racial traits.  So instead of 2 science per pop it will give 4 etc. :)

Thanks, it indeed does double their racial traits. Riftborn can't be boosted but they are already very strong as they are :)

Have also discovered a religious law that is extremely useful when you expand a lot: Saints & Sinners Bill Makes everyone in my riftborn empire happy, I can constantly expand. But if I ever lose that law is it game over, I keep a dust reserve to buy each election.

EDIT: The religious party has a "charming" leader in my game:
