Why not both? 

Art style directions from different cycles in development would be interesting to see. It'd be probably harder to create, though. And it'll probably take longer, too. To make it perhaps easier, it could be a series of two parts. One from vanilla and later - one with the expansions. There are quite some possibilities how it could be achieved.
