Trying out a game with the UC and the Unfallen (I believe) kept destroying a sanctuary on a system they moved in to.  I had more than one so just kept putting it back, but was curious how to knock out a sanctuary like that.

When it was destroyed, I got a message saying someone unknown has destroyed my sanctuary.  There was no fleet there and my other sanctuaries in the system were fine.  Can you hack a sanctuary to destroy it?  I don't remember anything saying I was hacked, but I don't pay all that much attention to hacks against me yet.

If someone spotted your Sanctuary, they can destroy it by launching a Hacking operation on that system.
