AI ally firing obliterator at my system

Hello, has anyone else faced an issue when the AI, being in a 3-way alliance, fires at your systems with an obliterator (multiple times as well!)? In the past I've created a bug report about this, and I saw a couple of similar threads dating back to year 2018; however, just today when playing in an alliance with Riftborn and UC, I encountered it again. The UC shot two of the systems I took from the Cravers. Is this something that hasn't been fixed? Or perhaps it's intended behaviour which I don't understand?

Obliterators are one of the subjects we looked into for the balance patch releasing this month, so stay tuned for more details on that later.

That said, there will probably always be the edge case of a system changing hands after the obliterator has already been fired. Luckily, that probably does not happen that often.

Actually, in this case both obliterator shots came well after I captured the systems (in fact, I would be perfectly fine if it's an edge case like that, I mean, once you fire something in space, it doesn't stop until it hits something :) ). But it's good to know that changes are coming!

Not only alliance, it also fires at empires it is at peace with (i mean, at the moment of the shot).

Does "every game" counts as not that often?

Actually, yes, in that same game the UC also fired at one of the Riftborn colonies...

The AI actively pulling the trigger on empires at peace or allied with them is a problem we've been looking into, along with general balance changes to Obliterators, but the precise patch notes will not be released until the patch drops.

However, as jiallombardo pointed out, shots fired before a system changed hands obey Newton's laws of motion (in space, those are more deadly than the Imperial Penal Code), so sometimes you will still get hit by stray obliterator shots. Hopefully that should not be every game.

AI Also posting an attack notification allies/factions you are at peace with is also something kind of annoying

Endless Space now officially has it's very own Gandhi AI :P

I also noticed I can't see an actual obliterator projectile my ally is firing, even though we have shared vision. I get to denounce or study his action, but can't actually see it to know where he shoots. I don't know, maybe this is related, but maybe constant desync state causing it.

Was this addressed?

So I checked the patch notes today, but didn't say anything about fixing this issue (perhaps I searched incorrectly, but no search for the word "obiterator" displayed any fix related to AI firing it at allied empires...)

  • Obliterators can only be fired if you are at war with the target

There's no change to the AI, because it is simply impossible to shoot at your ally now.

Exception: system ownership changes while missile heads to it's targeted system. Correct?

Yeah, but as discussed above, it actually makes sense. If you fire at an enemy, and then the system becomes friendly, then you can't just call off your shot (reminds me about that dialogue from Mass Effect).

Sneaky AI will now leave alliance, shoot, then rejoin back :D

On serious note,

So you just treated symptoms, instead of cause of disease? I just hope this won't end with more bugs, like AI still randomly considering its ally as enemy, stack Obliterators, then do nothing with them, because it can't shoot where it wants.

Yes this has happened many times to me as well.  Even after capturing the system(many turns has passed) the AI will still fire the Obliterators on the planets that were captured.

I just hope this does not introduce new bugs
