Reading the backstories of the different playable factions, and playing through their quests, many of them have some connection to the older races, specifically the Virtual Endless, Concrete Endless, or Lost. But it isn't always apparent which one, and it doesn't really make sense to me for some of them either.

Craver: created by the virtual endless to kill concrete endless planets?

Vodyani: Worship the Virtual Endless, but their faction quest gets really weird. They want revenge on the endles for what happened to the lost, or something? (Is there an option that sticks to traditional vodyani, or are all of them different "the truth of the tabernacle!?" stuff?)

Unfallen: the visuals in the intro seem to want to link them to the lost, but we have not seen any lost technology. Was the technology from the endless, which group of endless?

Hissho: Slave gladiators of the... concrete? endless.

Nakalim: Also kind of confusing. Raised up/ guided evolution from the Endless? (concrete I assume), but worshipped the Lost, received technology from the lost, now they hate the endless for killing the lost.

United Empire: Descendants of the Mezari (Nakalim and/or Aurigans)
Vaulters: Gravediggers of Endless (concrete?) technology, possibly became the mezari.
Horatio: Left UE and became new gravediggers of Endless technology
Sophons: none, maybe evolution guided by one of the endless factions.
Lumeris: none, maybe evolution guided by one of the endless factions.

Umbral Choir: no connection, maybe the signal the harmony were pursuing?
Riftborn: no connection

I haven't finished all of the questlines yet, and might have forgotten some of the information in them.

Anybody have more info, or a link to more info?

The Vodyani's faction quest has two paths. The Neutral/Heretic path involves reading the Tabernacle and getting really mad about it, the Religious path involves destroying the Tabernacle without reading it and remaining faithful. The split point is Chapter Two, the quest where you chose to either send a hero to explore a curiosity in a system or bring that system under your control.

I was pretty sure that Hissho predate division of the Endless and the civil war caused them to gain their freedom, no?

Vodyani:

Evolved independantly. Initially Worships the Virtual endless, uses their found tech transforming their physical forms

Horatio:

Worships only Horatio, eccentric billionairre that left the United Empire and uses found cloning tech of the Endless (Concrete endless presumably, or pre-schism).

Cravers:

Created by Virtuals to destroy Concretes, Virtuals rounded them up and tried to destroy them afterwards. Loyalty to the Virtual endless is up to your quest choices

United Empire:

Descended from Mezari empire, not related to any ancients

Vaulters:

Exiled prisoners from Mezari empire, lived on Auriga for a time which was the body of a Lost, and also a concrete Endless laboratory world.

Umbral Chior:

Extragalactic, not related to any ancients

Riftborn:

Extradimensional, not related to any ancients

Nakalim:

Old Empire from the time of the Endless. Worships the Lost, making them enemies of the Endless.

Hissho:

Uplifted and evolved by the Concrete endless for sport fighting.

Lumeris:

Evolved on their own, no relation to any ancients

Sophons:

Evolved on their own, no relation to any ancients

Unfallen:

Very old race, evolved on Koyasil which is one of the Lost, who they worship calling it "the Heart". It is possible they were made deliberately by the Lost.
