If you could change one (or more) parts of the lore...

What would you change? It can either be background fluff from the beginning of the game, how a particular quest line goes, or anything in between! It can be as fair, or petty, as you wished. Heck, if a dev reads this, tell us if there is anything you wish you wrote differently! (Or shoot down any of the ideas posted here...you have that perogative too) Alternatively, just boost your favorite faction and into a Mary Sue empire!

I guess here are my two things.

  • Make the Lost and Isyander's plot to revive them a little darker: Full disclosure - I am biased. I am strongly on the "Defender" side. That said, I feel that most of the small hints we get about the nature of the Lost suggest benevolent, forgiving entities that would just want to happily coexist with everyone else. I would have like to see alternative hints that they weren't all rainbows and sunshine, and/or that Isyander's plot genuinely would (as it is implied in marketing) involve "erasing... billions of corrupted souls in the galaxy," not just taking people's dust away. Come on, give us Defenders a little more moral equillibrium to the other side!

  • Tweak the United Empire industrialist ending: This is my personal "head-canon" ending. I feel that is the most thematically and morally fulfilling ending, with Zelevas realizing that the common people need to have a stake in the Empire too, not just the super wealthy. I would've liked it if the story took it just a wee bit further. Instead of, say, "Mount Zelevas", the monument was dedicated to the people of the United Empire as a whole. Maybe emphasize that it's construction marks the start of just a slightly less unequal, unfair society and economy.

Remove Nakalim and every other aspect of Awakening. I don't know WHO is responsible for the writing, but Academy related lore that had been built brick by brick in all previous expansions in a beautiful pace was turned into dust with this braindead nonsence. Yeah thoughts are that critical, I don't even consider that a canon.

Being a little bit more specific on that little rant, I'd like to point out how exactly tha pace was ruined. As we all know Academy in its initial quest chain is at first presented as an unknown entity of mysterious origin.

The first quest we get is near turn 16 (atmospheric curiosities one) and the first hint of its leader's personality is given after finishing the "find the academy quest" which requires you to spot its system. So we are softly hinted that the leader might be a Vodyani dissident. That is around turn 25 on average.

The first time we really meet the leader is a suuuuper late quest which appears around turn 100 and requires you to produce most dust via trading companies. That is all within the vanilla game.

After they released Celestial Worlds which introduced a long side quest realted to academy which was very cool and let us dive into deeper bureaucracy, but non of its elements broke the original pace, except the fact that we are given the name of the leader around turn 30.

Then comes awakeining. Turn 20. Isyander, the super powerful entity arrives in person (wytf?) and asks some barely post FTL dudes for some dust. Hello I am Isyander the mysterious!

Man this is lame, lazy thinking, lazy writing.

I would add in a reason why every empire except Nakalim and Umbral Choir are starting the game at the same time with the same technology. The Automatons had a great reason - they were awakened by a crash landing of a scout ship from another empire. The various descendants of the Mezzari, i.e. Horatio, United Empire, Vaulters, Sheredyn and Pilgrims all came from the same source and needed roughly the same time to establish themselves. The Riftborn were summoned by an event caused by the Vaulters leaving Auriga. However every other race just coincidentally joins in the game at the same time. Amoeba explicitly are ancient and yet they never did anything until they just happen to decide to expand at the same time as the other races.

I'd also clean up the lore about Auriga, the devs have acknowledged that there are a few issues there in particularly in Dungeon of the Endless.

I would fix "food". Riftborn and Sowers are not the only factions which "food" doesn't make sense for. Automatons, Harmony, and some minor factions such as Remnant don't really grow based on organic food.

I would give the "cosmic strings" some backstory. Perhaps they are remnants of a travel system created by the Endless.

I would add more planets with multiple climates, and combine the nearly redundant Terran, Jungle, Monsoon, Atoll, Forest, Boreal, Mediterranean. How are you going to have a Mediterranean planet? Why does every planet have one biome? Tidally locked planets like Mercury have a hot side and a cold side. Unless the abundance of mono-biome earth-like planets was a remnant of Concrete terraforming.
