Sudden, Seemingly Inexplicable Pop Loss

I was doing a run-of-the-mill next-turn click, and 'lo and behold, seven systems experienced pop loss, which is quite the reversal.

I go in and remove the Patriot Pills Plant from each planet. Okay, planets go from -60 or -70 per turn to +150 or more. Wow. How the heck did I go from rampant growth to a sharp decline so quickly? II know patriot pills convert 20% of food into production, but it's not like I just built all these plants in the last turn. Some have been there since early in the game.

Some of these systems have been heavily terraformed into atolls, terran, and so on. They have plenty of food buildings too. They have Horatio and Haroshems. Oh, and they're almost all Ecstatic, no it's not like I'm in anarchy or anything.

Nothing really obvious has happened. Does this happen at some point when manpower capacity experience a sudden change?

Well, it was specifically a precipitous drop in food production that was causing the loss. After removing the pill plants, things more-or-less stabilized.

But like I said, those planets were nothing new. I had enough food to go around. It's like some major empire-wide change occurred, similar to what might be experienced after a law was abolished. Just odd.

Could be populations growing bigger than the food production could handle, an event effect could have ended that turn, though I cannot think of one that could do it.

It could be a combination of manpower generation and an event ending. There's at least one exploration event that just gives a huge food boost to your populations, though I forget its name.

If you'd just finished colonizing systems/building warships (particularly warships with invasion modules), that would cause your empire manpower stock to drop, and the food conversion to kick in. I don't think the conversion applies when you're capped out.
