Should I put kinetic weapons on protector ships?

Good evening. I read in the protector ships' description they attract fire shot from the enemies. Does this mean that I should be using kinetic weapons to protect my attacker ships?

That means that Slugs will be more effective on protector/coordinator ships in general, yes. However it is a bit more comlicated than that, because if enemy has a fleet of protectors then they can focus attackers first.

Can you elaborate please? What I don't understand is: if the duty of the protectors is to shield the attackers of the enemy (from missiles, energy), why would them focus the player's attackers?

Because target priorities. Luckily, Protectors rarely have more firepower and ship numbers then Attackers.

It's still a good idea to equip protectors with Slugs IF you expect to fight missiles heavy fleets. Once you unlock Coordinators, you should switch Slugs to them.

Furthermore Protectors are usually more tanky than attackers so they have a better chance to reach the short range stage, at which slugs excel.

I read the reddit link about target priorities Sublustris mentioned. I have two questions: in the first table, do protectors ship count as supporter ones? and in the second table, the 600 hull weakness, does it mean large ships have the weakest hull?

Yes and yes.

In ES1 it was reversed, when small ships had larger weakness then big. ES2 enabled small hulls to take better advantage from defence modules.

Yes, but not by much. The higher hull weakness of medium and large hulls mostly just compensates for the fact that they get 2 or 4 defense modules per slot you fill. You can see your expected damage reduction if you toggle the "detailed stats" on the right of the ship design menu. So for example, a single Titanium Plating on a small, medium, and large hull give 55%, 49%, and 44% damage reduction respectively.
