Hey there. Maybe this post doesn't make much sense, but I kinda want to start this discussion anyway.

What are the ideas or mentalities behind the proper names use in the game?

For example, the unique planet "Sykagoja". Is there an etymology to this proper name? How is it coined? Did the devs just make these names using random combination of syllables?

Thanks!

Hey -- sorry to be so slow on this (accidental pun).

In brief, yes! Every culture or civilization in our universe has its language linked to something from our world or its history. The Mezari names (and their offshoots) are generally Slavic or Hungarian, everything having to do with the Hissho is generally Japanese (though maybe mixed with Nahuatl), the Drakken names are heavily altered Thai, etc. We do this for a few reasons:

  1. It helps ensure that all of the names in the faction (places, characters, titles, rites, etc.) have the same sound and feel
  2. When coming up with names for ships or places or characters, we can use features or aspects of the thing to create its name in the associated language. That is way simpler than trying to come up with a new jumble of letters each time...
Unfortunately, I can't find my notes from back when we did the novella and introduced Sykagoja and Hatokage, so I can't give a specific Japanese word that they reference (though I think the fact that "kage" means "shadow" is probably relevant).

Nice to see the question!
