But to make a Vodyani in question, beings deemed worthy of uplifting has to go through process known as Virtualization: separation of consciousness from the body and transforming it to transferable form. For that Vodyani use machinery leftovers from Virtual Endless, that they dig out on their homeworld. Vodyani's version of the process is probably imperfect. Unlike in case of Endless, they also require substance dubbed as Essence - also form of consciousness, or life force, that they harvest from races Vodyani consider lesser. Those souls and minds are painfully mend into Essence, and then with little remaining from former individuals, fused with uplifted being. A newly virtualized Vodyani can then be uploaded or transferred to Ark ship, that serves as their new home, or "packed" into dust-powered suit called Cloth, that you can see on Vodyani heroes. Or even be joined with heavy armored vehicles, like tanks and bipedal robots - irreversible process, but considered to be a high honor among Vodyani.

While Captain Cobbs' version would certainly win the community vote, this one isn't up for discussion :D  (though if it makes you happy, in your own headcanon you can always translate "Essence" as "sex juice").

As far as the official explanation goes, it's a lot closer to Sublustris ^^
