How, why and what is affecting over colonization limit?

I was 4 systems beyond colonization threshold. ex. 25 systems out of 21 limit.


I noticed my over colonization limit expanded on it's own so that I was beyond threshold by only 2 after some time and then later by only 1, without me researching any tech that would expand this limit.

I also did not change government type to federation.


My question is, how or what did expand the limit? it seems like the limit is expanding due to something and I would like to know what is it?

Thank you for reply but I also didn't build any Autonomous Administration buildings in that game, the limit expands on it's own.


Right now I started a new game and my limit was 10 systems as default, then after some turns the limit dropped to 9 systems.

Obviously I didn't do anything yet the limit is not constant, it goes up and down depending on something but I'm 100% sure it's not tech, not buildings and not my government.


I'm rather surprised that nobody knows why is this and what effects it? it seems people don't pay attention to this limit?


Do you have any other suggestions that come to your mind?

Some quest rewards, governments (federation), hero skills, technologies, and minor faction assimilation traits also do it, but autonomous administration is the main way.

I'm baffled because I did none of these things yet my limit is changing, I started the game with 10, then it went to 9 and now back to ten.


The only thing that I did is colonize few worlds, built few ships and destroyed a pirate base. nothing else.

What is your current government type? Guess you don't make use of mods, right?

Colonization limit is affected by size of map(which affects starting limit), Federation Government(+1 per Senate representative), research(ex: Xeno Anthropology), assimilation of Kal Tik Ma if they have Star Trekkers trait and Autonomous Administration(requires level 4 system). Anything else does not apply.

Ah I see now, change may happen when I lose or gain senate governor during elections! I didn't count for that.

Yes I have federation.


But this still doesn't explain my problem, I only have one hero ATM and it's always in the senate.

I have some feeling that amount of population or something similar in empire affects the limit.

Here are 2 save files of same game just few turns away from each other.

Please take a look let me know why in one save file there is limit of 10 and then in other save file it jumped to 11, please let me know where did +1 come from?

Did you try to hover over the numbers for overcolonization, yet? I could imagine it shows your current factors for overcolonization limit, but not sure. By the way, it would have been useful to upload your save files this place, for to check it out.

I did but it doesn't show any factors, the tooltip is not useful.

Guess we wrote and posted nearly same time and you were a little bit faster this case. I'm not at home at the moment. Will check the save files out next day, if anybody else is faster.

Ok, you have an exceptional galaxy seize, what results in max. 9 colonies before over-colonization hits in. You have +1 for one hero in leading political party for your current governement = 10. Same in both save files, but, as you point out, you now have a limit of 11 colonies in oyur second save file for no obvious reason.


As long as you make use of the "Dark Matters" DLC, I could imagine the bug is related to the DLC, perhaps to the bugged quest "Death Without a Corpse" coming along with? (to be fixed with workshop mod Death without a corpse quest fix (DarkMatter DLC) or ESG Mod 1.5


The bugged quest results in 2 more uncolonizable systems for each player (AI and human) having the quest. Perhaps this does have impact in other places as over-colonization limit, too. Sadly I'm not able to load your save files with the mods activated. The only other difference I see between the 2 save files: You have 3 outposts, instead of 1 before. But I have no idea, if it could have an impact on this issue. Perhaps the community member and modder Captain Cobbs could offer a better analysis. I have to admit I can't solve your question... shame on me.

I'm glad to know this is not normal, I thought there are some unknown factors involved, but I'm already aware of uncolonizable systems and mod fix from other forum posts, sadly I can't use the mod with current game, but I'll use it with a new game next time and see if that's the issue.
