So with the current anchoring mechanic that Vodyani Arks have, it gave me an idea, Starbases. Why isnt this on the to-do-list?
By my imagination, Starbases would be a Era 3-4 shiphull that systems can build. It should have the capablity to move systems, but extremely slowly. When anchored, a fleet has to fight it to get at the ground forces, or at the very least remove control of a system. This means that Starbases would operate as a solidifying multiplier against invading forces. All active functions of a Starbase should be only enabled if the base is anchored. As such they would be unable to fire their massive assortment of heavy module guns, or perhaps use trade bonuses to trade companies without the anchor. I would love to see this ingame at some point, however i think this might be more of an DLC idea.
On a side note, this is truly how Vodyani Ark's should function. I truly feel ground battling Vodyani should not be a way to effectivly take Arks. Ark's should be purely space battle. And Arks need to have hull upgrades over Eras.
I honestly don't think this idea would really fit with the Endless universe in it's current state. I do have a suggestion though, as I have also been looking into ideas for something similar to suggest. Instead of making the starbase a ship, make it a building. This building would function as it's own micro-manufacturing unit, being able to launch probes, block enemy fleets, provide attrition/retaliation damage enemy ships and bonuses to allies in system, and the ability to extend your influence radius and garrison ships. It would obviously be expensive to do, but having such a forward base would be immensely useful.
But wouldn't all of that be far easier as a unit? You would literally just have a different type of Ark for each faction. You could have the Starbase come with a bonus to production to cover for the manufacturing.
I just think if such a thing were to be implemented, it would just have to be a unit, as all the mechanics already exist.
I say this is a great idea, but I agree that is the current state it would be too much.
Let the game develop and see it something like this would fit, I mean in case there is another race that can do this as a special or it could possibly be a trait to pick rather then all the races getting one.
Or it could even be that the special race/Trait only unlocks a special science that you need to progress.
Was thinking about starbases one hour ago. Would be a great idea, but I don't really dig the moving starbase idea. I like them stationary, massive and frighteningly powerful. Like, Era VII powerful. I know it's only Era V.
It is a nice idea ... but I'd prefer the arks to be only for the Vodyani... it's part of what makes them special.... IF starbases are implemented, they should fulfill a completely different role than the vodyani arks.
