You clearly have it in the system to edit them, but you can't edit them?

You should be able to either edit the pirate ships you have, or once buying them, be able to use the blueprints.

This screenshot touches on another point, after a while of hiring new heros, their ships show up where you can edit their blueprints?

No one agrees?

What's stopping an advanced civ from making a blueprint after buying said merc ships?

I really like the design of these merc ships but there's no point in buying them if I can't modify them, Otherwise they're just cheap fodder to throw away at an enemy or to place on defense on some planets. The interesting designs are wasted potential if used that way.
