RTS instead of turn based, for better game flow in multiplayer

Just as the title sais.

The game already has more RTS elements than most turn based games. In fact, if you compare it to a Total war title for instance you'll find that ES is basically a RTS game which is seperated in time turns, most turn based elements like that your enemies are frozen as long as it is your turn basically aren't there

so I thought, since many people had issues with multiplayer games dragging out long and players leaving and wanting to enter takes some time as well and is somehow chaotic,

Why not turn the whole game from turn based into a Real time strategy? If you think about it, actually nothing would change. It might be a bit more challenging and will require more multi tasking, but it might turn out to be positive.

I think it would be best to test this in a mod though, but aside from that, I see no real problem with going RTS.

Thanks for your opinions in advance

It's extremely unlikely that a game with AI programmed for turns could be changed to real time. The programming is likely to be very different for parallel realtime calculation, compared to sequential turns. Even if it were possible, I hope Amplitude games stick with turn-based strategy for their games.

Have you played Stellaris? It's realtime with adjustible speed (in singleplayer) and pausing on events. That's a good example of the pros and cons. In multiplayer you're not waiting for the other player. But the trade-off is that in singleplayer, you're waiting on the game, sitting on your hands and watching a number tick up on the screen for minerals, energy, or influence before you can do something. The game constantly shifts between the player waiting passively for something to happen, and then dealing with alerts that pause the game. Then back to waiting for more events, or watching the numbers tick up.

I think I've spent half my gaming time in Stellaris staring at the screen and waiting for numbers to change. At least in the early to mid-game, with the latest patch that slows down early expansion.

A turn based game like ES2 is far less passive in singleplayer mode. You make your decisions, then hit Next Turn. There is a short delay, and then you have the next game state. You're not passively waiting for something to happen. If things get slow, you might have to hit Next Turn a few times, but at least it's an action, and not passively waiting for numbers to tick up so you can do something.

As someone who only plays singleplayer, never multiplayer, I much prefer this current turn-based design.

It's not just the AI. The entire game is built as a TBS. This sort of overhaul is just unfeasible.

I'm reminded of Sins of a Solar Empire, I have no idea what could or could not work for this game.

Interesting to at least imagine the plausibilities though.

That is quite literally impossible without reworking the entire game. And I prefer my Endless games turn based.
