No successful trace = Still knows you did it?

I'll admit I'm not 100% on this, but it sure seems like if the AI is aware that you exist, regardless of if they manage to trace your hacks against them, they WILL get annoyed and tell you to stop hacking them.

I mean that can't be intentional, right? That has to be a bug. Otherwise what am I supposed to just not hack my friends?

As I remember, it is intentional. AI will generate the report on the offender of hacking when it fails to trace the source. Therefore, series of hacking attacks on the same target might make them annoyed on you.

All my attention for the first half the game is just expanding to more and more sanctuaries before anyone else gets there and makes it harder.  I've found that hacking other factions doesn't really give me all that much in comparison.

Hi,

If their trace has gone far enough along your hacking op, they have a higher chance of guessing the hack comes from you; you can also use this as a player to get a fairly accurate idea of who is trying to hack you :)

What happens if this is vs uncontacted ie UC? Will the enemy STILL contact you if their trace is unsuccesful but they can guess  that something unknowable exists?

Yeah, they will guess where UC dwell.

So it's not guaranteed then? That's good to know. Still, that takes some of the fun out of playing UC. It's no fun if they KNOW you're messing with them xD

I hear ya, but I figure if I'm at peace with- or allied to a neighboring AI/player, I'm gonna want to have sanctuaries on their systems at some point, or at the very least some backdoors. I'd also love it if there were other more beneficial things you could do with hacks in regards to other players. I don't think the AI even considers that me adding sanctuaries and backdoors to their systems can be beneficial :(
