I feel like this is something that should be a part of this game. Being able to assign the different fleet skins that are available to the player to the AI teams as well. Would be nice to be able to have 2 sophon teams in the game and have one standard and the other playing with the Mavros Fleet skins as an example. I feel like this would be a good addition to this great game.

I just now saw this post, not sure how I missed it. 


For some reason I thought you could already do this and I never really bothered to check because I usually play with unique restrictions (only one of each faction) but yes, I agree this could be a neat addition. I wouldn't mind bringing the Holy Fire of the Only True Church of the Virtuals against the Heretic and his blasphemous (and ugly) white hulls! 


(P.S. - They're not really 'ugly' I actually think the Heretic skins are gorgeous)

I am a big fan of the of the Lumeris Buccaneer skin. I actually havent tried playing yet with the Heretic skins. They are a pretty slick from the preview screen though.


I get the feeling that people never really noticed that they couldn't change the AI fleet skins. If the option was there i feel like people would utilize the option.

I would think a drop down arrow would possibly work. Maybe add another box next to the race name where you can select the fleet skin you would like?


Happy to see all the support for this thread. Glad to see there is community interest in this too.

Yes please.

An alternative would be to have the devs release the skins as indiviual applicable mods, then you can just click the mod skins you want.  I don't understad why we need two seperate techs which do the same, with the modding option being superior to the hard coded intigrated system.

I'm definitly in the camp of "I thought you could already do this." I usually play with one of each race too, but it'd be nice to add for a bbit of variety.

I'd really love it if the skins changed on events from the questlines, but I think it's impossible or they'd have done it already.

While we agree that it would be great for the skins to change with the quests (e.g. United Empire), the system is unfortunately not designed for that.

Yes does this mean that you would consider adding the option to select different skins for AI races when setting up a game?

Is this something thats difficult/time consuming? If not, I'm not sure why it isn't already in the game to be honest. 


Also, are alternate skins for Vaulters, Hissho, Umbral Choir, and any future factions a possibility?

I'm not a programmer, but as far as I understand the system was not designed with alternate skins in mind (as mentioned before), so it does require a bit of work on the UI and under the hood, so I'm afraid this feature is not a priority.

You've mentioned it can't be used for quest/script units, but that should be different from proper faction.


So, to sum it up, Amplitude

  • releases hero ship skin as part of Digital Deluxe edition and Craver fleet skin, as part of preorder bonus;
  • releases even more skins as community DLC reward;
  • claims system was not designed with skins in mind (can't be applied to AI players)


That sounds like a huge oversight.

Amplitude, maybe it's time to raise priority for this feature from the sheer fact that this thread is second highest upvoted in game design subforum? People are clearly instrested in it and expect you to deliver.


I remember "unique random faction" was also claimed as "hard to implement" for Endless Legend, nevetheless it eventually made to the game and received a warm welcome from players. Thankfully, you've also implemented it from the get-go in ES2. Features like this are so obvious to your players, that they expect to have them by default, not to hear about misterious "priorities".


P.S. I hope some software engineer from NGD will stumble upon this post and lookup at feasibility to deliver this feature.

Again I raise the point, if it's difficult to hard code into the game, make a series of alternative skin mods and release them on the worshop. Then you can even have the skins used by the AI. This would take some time, but would't require any system overhauls

I had not yet joined Amplitude back then, so I can not speak to how the Alternate Skin system came to be implemented as it is, but given some of the problems I've seen reported with the alternative skins, I have come to realize that the system is more complicated than I believed before.


I'm sorry to hear our priorities are mysterious to some people, though. In the recent months, our top priority was the collaboration with NGD and ensuring that they are in the best position to do a great job with their work on Endless Space 2. Nonetheless, we are closely following the forums and will do our best to answer as many concerns as possible, and will talk more about this before the release of the expansion.

With talk of an Endless space 2 update happening seems like a good time to dust this off and once again ask for this to be added to the game. Really feels like something that would add to the overall experience that most people probably don't realize is missing.

I agree. I would love to have different fleet skins for the AI. Going up against a Mavros fleet would be awesome!
