I've never used them, but they intrigue me. I'm guessing they would work well with Cravers who have boosts to their Infantry, because don't these things take into account your Inf troops combat stats? Do you combine them with flotilla crew destruction mods? Or is all this a waste of time and just get the latest big guns to blow stuff out of the sky?

Boarding pods are fun. Give them a try.

If you enemy does not have any flak-guns you can sometimes steal entire fleets from them.

One thing to keep in mind, tho: If your empire doesn't have a lot of manpower production, you can absolutely cripple your manpower reserves. Which is annoying, if you try to invade somewhere... or get invaded yourself.
