AI backstabs allies w/ Obliterator?

At about 200 turns, and in a long standing 3-way alliance with both the UE and Vaulters, the UE goes psycho rogue and hits one of my systems (luckily well shielded!) with an obliterator, then recharges and hits one of the Vaulters systems with the obliterator. Full alliance still standing through all of this.


Is this “normal” behavior for the AI?  Something triggered their anger maybe?  I found it strange that the UE attacked both of its allies rather than one of the other three enemy factions in the game.

AFAIK this is not expected.


You should look for a save of previous turn and the turn that this happened and post into bugs section, so devs can llok into this.

Not sure if I still have an autosave at that point in the game, but if I do, I will post it for examination.  The obliterator shot definitely came from an allied UE system, but it occurs to me that I never actually verified that the obliterator itself was flying UE colors. Is it possible that another faction or possibly pirates might shoot off an obliterator while in foreign territory, completely on the opposite side of the galaxy from their home domain?

This is a very plausible explanation, a human player can do it, not sure if the AI can reach this conclusion.

Also IRRC pirates cannot, as they don't have behemoths, but another player for sure can do it.

Ok, I will see if I can find a game save around that point in the game, and then will see if I can find the actual offending obliterator. Game save is probably long lost now, but I’ll hunt around for it just in case. If I can resolve the mystery I’ll post back here to this thread.

I found a few older saves from this campaign, and I can verify that it was indeed the UE's obliterator that shot both my system as well as our other ally's system (the Vaulters).


Given that these games saves are from after the obliterator shots, not sure if they would be of any use at all for debugging (devs, let me know if you want these saves).  However, again, I can confirm that it was an allied obliterator that attacked both other allied parties in a 3-way alliance.

Actually, after hunting around a bit, I found that I do have one save file that is exactly 1 turn before the UE obliterator shot hits my system.  So, again, devs, if this is something that would be useful for debugging, let me know and I'll post a bug report along with this save file.

Ok here's the save file, along with a few details:


Version:

  V1.3.9 S5 GOLD-Public, MacOS 10.13.6


Brief description:

  UE (AI), Vaulters (AI) and Unfallen (human) are in 3-way alliance.  From UE system Othero (top right), the UE has fired off an obliterator at the Unfallen system Wasat (bottom center).  The attached save file is at turn 220, one turn before the UE obliterator shot hits Wasat. Wasat was previously Horatio's capital system prior to their complete elimination.  If you keep playing this game through further, the UE will recharge the obliterator and then also shoot one of the Vaulter's allied systems.
