Been digging through and cannot find where the GUI art assets are stored and it looks like the in-game exporter only does the models. 

The GUI xml files rerence a bitmaps path. Is there any way to access these files?

Presently this does not seem to be the case. You could experiment with trying to import your own, however.

It's possible to extract them from the Unity asset files, but only if you know how to.

Don't suppose you would be willing to extract them and post them so we have a repository to use?

Specifically I'm looking for the Probe icon so I don't have to use a tiny cropped screenshot as my mod icon.

I have not tryed it yet, I have done it with the original endless space. So I'm giving it a shot now.

I am assuming this is what you meant by probe icon.

I would be able to extract more and post them all as one big zip for modders to use but I am not comfortable posting it without a dev giving me the go ahead to do so.

If you wanted to share your secrets that would be appreciated. I know I will use this in the future for mod icons and more.

As to what Kareal was looking for, my guess is he meant either of the probe icons from the actions for an exploration ship but probably better would be the picture used when hovering over a probe in the game.

The way I did it was using my knowledge of unity and Computer science but mostly luck.

I have had a look around and There is this tool which should be able to extract textures and meshes

The two sets that I would like examples of would be the ship modules (which, I know, is a large set!) and the Starsystem improvements (stuff you can add to your planets).
