Return of the Old: Original Endless Space Heroes
Now that hero visuals are moddable I am Planning (& Working) on taking all the Heroes from the first Endless Space and bringing them into Endless Space 2
I’ve done some of the work needed, but there is still quite a lot more to go (there is an in-depth of the work list below)
I Have opened this thread for discussion about this mod, as I’m still not sure on how I should do certain aspects and I do need help from the Community and/or Developers to make this a good mod.

I Plan to add it on the steam workshop when its basic functionality is complete (as otherwise making any changes will break all savegames using it)
I would Upload it to the forum but it is already above the 4MB file limit (The estimated final file size is 150MB-200MB)
I will look into a place to possibly host it if anyone has any suggestions.
Feel Free to comment on and discuss this mod and how you think I should do it.



The Work Required


Basic Framework of the Mod - Done

Add Hero Framework - Done

Add Hero Names/Descriptions - Done

Get High Quality Hero Art - (69/82) - I Haven’t found high quality (> 284x126) for 13 Heroes (Details a bit below)

Add in the Art - Done - All the art is added in, but as per above 13 heroes have low quality art

Set up each hero's Race - (Basics Done, Community Help Requested)                   ‾\

Set up each hero's Class - (Basics Done, Community Help Requested)                      } - (Details Below)

Set up each hero's Political Group - (Basics Done, Community Help Requested)    /

Set up each hero's Custom Trait - (Not Started, Community Help Requested)      _/

Add Custom Faction Traits to add each hero (mostly for testing) - Not Started 

Testing - Ongoing

Mod Icon - Done - It's not the best but it will do for now


Possibilities in the future:

Make Custom Trait Trees (I.E. Making Custom Hero Races and Classes)

Add Quests to recruit certain heroes (much like the recent update added)

Not Sure, feel free to suggest ideas

Extra Heroes?

There are 82 Unique Heroes in Endless Space, but 61 of them had two different first names, should I leave out these heroes' secondary first names and just have the 82 Heroes or add them in as copies of the original hero but with a different first name in the way ES1 did it (for a total of 143 heroes)


Heroes Races, Classes, Political Groups & Custom Traits

Each of the heroes need to have these aspects, While I can just kind of use the existing classes of the heroes for their new class I do want to hear what people think,

What Heroes fit what which hero race? 

What heroes should be in which political group? (I Personally have no idea, other than randomly assigning them)

And Each hero in the game starts with a custom trait, what should these heroes have? (I can't think of 82 custom traits and as the creator of the sandbox mod I don't trust my sense of what's balanced)


Future Possibilities

Like the idea of this mod but think it could do with something more, I'm happy to listen to ideas.

My personal Ideas are adding in new races and classes and their trait trees (maybe make these heroes feel more like how they were in ES1) and also adding in events for recruiting the more special heroes.


High Quality Hero Art

I'm lacking good art for many heroes, the ones in most dire need of good art are shown in the image below. 

I have so far gotten the art from the game files (but its low quality), The Art Book (but it does not contain all the heroes) and the Wikia (only a few are high quality)

So, if you happen to have high quality (> 284x126) art of any of the heroes send it my way 

(I hope the devs can help here as I'm not sure if high quality art for all the heroes is publicly available)

All Heroes have been set to a random Political Group

All Heroes have the same example starting hero trait

The United Empire Is set to receive all the heroes on the game start

Thanks, This is a great help I'm now down to 13 Heroes Needing better art.

The ID's For the 13 are 08, 11, 33, 34, 37, 42, 49, 50, 53, 54, 56, 58 and 82. If that helps.

This a great idea, brings back a lot of good memories from ES1! I could probably look through all the heroes and help determine what political group they are if you need help. Good luck and keep up the good work!

That would be very helpful if you wanted to do that, my only request would be that you try to keep it somewhat balanced I.E. have at least 11 heroes to each political group.


Currently what I'm doing is looking at the feasibility of implementing the ES1 Hero skill tree system (or something similar), it's going well but has its difficulties.

This is a rather large project, So I do appreciate any help.

One of the problems I've found so far is that basically all the Hissho are Guardians. The Political parties seem to be pretty evenly split, with Religious and Ecologist having the least. I'm not done with them though, I'll sennd you my ideas when I'm near to completion.

Hey CyRob, made any progress with this mod? I know that we left off at determining the stats of each hero. I could try to come up with those sometime soon.

It's mostly done. But the issue is that its rather buggy.

I have implemented the ES1 Hero Skill system into the ES2 Skill Tree but Custom Skills in Custom Skill Trees seems to cause many issues.


I'm slowly trying to find the cause but it may not be on my end (could be an issue with the game), I don't know yet.


I also had a hard drive failure a short while back which meant I lost quite a bit of progress which is why I've been so slow with it.


Hopefully I will have a breakthrough will it soon. Guess we will all have to wait and see.

Sorry to hear about the hard drive failure, that sucks. 


I didn't know you were working on custom skill trees, that's great. I just expected the heroes to use the existing ones. Good luck with that, unfortuneatly I won't be of any help with that unless you need help coming up with ideas for skills.

Once its released (hopefully sometime soonish) it will need balancing as the skill effect do not translate well into ES2 (some can't at all) 

So you could be a great help there with suggesting changes.

In case anyone was wondering on the how the ES1 skills have been Converted over,

This is the master plan It shows the stuff for all classes not just the two the Hero is.


Green = Administrator

Blue = Corporate

Pink = Adventurer

Orange = Commander

Yellow = Pilot

Grey = Everyone

Shouldn't we follow the same system as ES2? As in have 1 skill tree universal, 1 from class and one from faction. That makes more sense to me.

The ES1 Skills don't fit that system well unfortunately as there is a lot of generic skills and many class only skills spread about the tree but no faction skills.

I'm trying to keep the heroes quite similar to how they are in ES1 (without being unbalanced)

We will see how it goes I can always make changes.
