[Faction idea] The Cloud

DISCLAIMER:

I'll post here some ideas of factions I got, if you're interested in them, have in mind I got no modding nor artistic skills, so feel free to use any of my ideas, as long as you give credit.

Also feel free to comment anything you want.

I'll always start with a summary post and develop it further, so if you like better wait, because I'll expand the ideas in further posts but won't be fast.

I'll do some updates in its originals posts, so I'll try to keep, at least, an update date in each post. As EA progress and game is changed after release, I also will try to update according its pace. Like before, I'll take may long time, and won't be fast.

Summary:


I got to this idea after reading about manpower in GDDs plus, my like of the idea of some factions losing the use of a resource (like Harmmony with dust, suppose everyone understands). Have in mind that it also may be a side effect of watching too much sci-fi on TV .

The thought was: shat if a faction doesn't use ships instead of a resource? And come to this.


Brief description:


The cloud is a species of microscopic live, not carbon-based, but constructed from rare elements (rare for our point of view, of course), that form colonies like coral. Their unconscius goal is to achieve homeostasis, and have all of them a constant and comfortable status.

As they slowly colonized its homeworld, a hot and desrted planet, near to its sun, they covered all its surface. Then homestoasis was broken: some where exposed to sun and high temperatures, while at same time, in the other face of the planet, the other half of the cloud was exposed to very low temperatures, as they got a very thin atmosphere. This creates a conscious and slowly learned how to create structures that allow them dealing with this, achiveing homeostasis again.

But it again was broken: a ship full of dust crashed into surface. The cloud assimlated the ship, and learned how to incorporate dust into their colonies, also learned how to go into space, pursuing its main and unconscious desire: spread homeostasis in the universe, to finally allow them live undisturbed.


Gameplay:


The main idea of gameplay is not having ships or fleets. Yes, you read correctly.

To deal with it, the clod can confrom into shapes that allow them to travel using starlanes, wormholes, or directly into the void. Once in its destinations, the cloud loses its configuration, and tries to colonize what in available.

With thisgameplay, the cloud cannot engage in combat, but to defent, the cloud expand over the atmosphere of colonized planets, covers enemy ships and starts slowly damaging them, until they're destroyed. To achive this uses a mechanic similar to manpower in sieges and invasions. Of course enemy fleets can shoot at the cloud and damage it with their wepons, but there won't be a current battle, but a slow process of mutual damage, until one falls.

This will take long to develop, as I'm not sure how to fit it with future game settings, and probably won't develop further until games is near release, or has been released.
