I'll admit I'm probably not the best player when it comes to ES2, and I've had particular trouble when trying to play the Sophons main quest. I get stuck very early on trying to- for instance- increase military support in 3 of my systems by 30%, as is required by one of the quest options. I've tried constructing ships and military improvements to no avail. Do I really have to go to war or have militarists as an active political party to achieve this? Am I doing it wrong?

In recent patches, the military influence has been toned down because it was too easy giving power to them by the ways you mentioned.

You pretty much answered your own question there, you have to be ready to wage wars to increase your support, I imagine you chose the militarist route for some reason.

Another thing that might help you is to assimilate militarist minor factions but you'll need to be lucky for that to have enough around you in the galaxy.

That reason wasn't war though. I hate war in 4X games. In fact that's why I selected the option in the first place - the thought of an AI to take over that aspect of my empire, since I have to choose one (I know that doesn't actually happen). It's roleplay. Plus I like having a strong defense in case I end up going to war anyway.

I always start a game with the intention of roleplaying, and in the end i am min/maxing the s... out of it.

On your question: paying pirates is also supposed to raise your military approval. you don´t have to go to war and the pirates stop attacking your systems.

O.o Huh, I'll have to try that.
