Terrible graphics 5 years ago

Hi, so I've purchased the game through steam and played it well for 3 hours when I suddenly logged on and saw the Horatio's face not loading, I jumped in a game and no star lanes have appeared, clicking auto explore the ships will go anywhere without me researching free movement. Somebody help. I have a mac osx high sierra.
