How about Space Horrors? Much like the hostile to everyone kraken monster in Endless Legend: Tempest, these would be similar monstrosities or hostile cosmic events that would indiscriminately affect the galaxy. It would be interesting to see how something this would affect diplomacy. Possibly different horrors with different behaviors? One horror would be attracted to heavily populated worlds which would cause worry for factions like the Cravers. Another horror could focus on technologically advanced factions, which would affect technologically based factions. Maybe to break the mold, an entirely different horror would not be a fightable entity but something insidiously corrupted your population forcing the player to either research a solution or purge the affected population? Of course I feel there would need to be an entirely chaotic horror as well that would just rampage through the galaxy, not focusing on any specific player at all.

The reward for dealing with these monstrosities? Maybe rewards in the form of rare resources or dust? How about special ship designs that are made from parts and pieces of the horrors (think designs from Monster Hunter where aspects of the defeated monster are incorporated into the equipment)?

We have some events where you encounter strange creatures, but as Etheon pointed out, fighting the "space kraken" is out of vision for ES2.

I really like this idea of cosmic horrors being in there. It could easily be remnants of the Virtual or Concrete Endless; I remember one event in ES involved someone accidentally activating the 'killswitch' in Dust or something and making all nations lose a big chunk of dust, or something like that. Random event.  Whose to say some scientist (probably a Sophon) doesn't accidentally push the shiny red button and awaken some sort of guardian machine or let's some sort of genetically engineered space-beast escape the lab?

Making it into a global quest would be awesome. Having unique rewards (tech, weapons, special ship designs, etc) would be amazing.

Like a giant space monster floating through space. Like from GR's Andromeda episode "Belly of the Beast"

Giant space worms like Empire strikes back?

As a type of event, that sounds like a great idea. we just don't want to fight space kraken, which are not part of the Endless Universe.

Could you go into a bit more detail please? How did the horrors act as the game went on, what was the quest chain like, what were the rewards, how badly could they screw over a nation, etc?

I think it can be done as a Global Quest: they can spawn as a big fleet somewhere in the galaxy and there is a reward for defeating them, much like in EL, where sometimes Guardians spawn as a Quest.

Monsters, from Space Kracken to Giant Amoeba to Rogue Moons, etc. and either as Quests or Ships to be defeated.

If you want something that becomes more dangerous with Dust expenditure, what about using this as a mechanism to insert the Harmony into the late game story?

Upvoted, yet another great idea for late game difficulty and replayability.

Supporting this idea as well, I've had tremendous fun with Stellaris with it's bunch of leviathans and the likes.

Drag some of those in perhaps?

(forgive if they've already been brought up in current iterations of ES2, i find it hard to complete the Vodyani quest chain in time as it stands.)

That's one of the things that would be cool in that there would be race specific monstrosities that would target races that were doing too well. A rogue dust construct would specifically target players that were making too much money. An abstract horror that defies logical thought would target scientifically advanced races. A rampant parasitic infestation would wreak havoc upon players with high populations. The possibilities go on.

Now you've got a reason for dust cost inflation.

Beware Astronauts, when you're buying stuff with Dust, you feed Da Creepy Monster.

Or it could be part of the late game adverse event mechanic. Who are those horrors going to be, though, lore-wise?
