Choice of Ship Designs when upgrading/retrofitting ships

Ship Design

Let the player pick among a list of all the Ship Designs he/she has made for a given Hull type when upgrading/retrofitting a ship with that Hull type.

Alternatively let the player change the Ship Design to which the individual ships are upgraded in the Military Status screen to achieve the same end result.

I think this would be much cleaner than having to change Ship Designs back and forth because you want to change the specialization of a given ship.

Example:

Lets say you made two different ship designs using Hull type A. One design exclusively includes Slug weapons which you call Slugslinger. The second design exclusively includes Torpedo weapons which you call Torpedoboat. You now build some of these ships and during the course of the game you discover you need a different ratio of Slugslingers to Torpedoboats to prevail. You have the dust and you decide you want to retrofit some of the Slugslingers you build to Torpedoboats. The game does not let you do that currently as far as I know. You would have to edit your Slugslinger design to include Torpedos but that ruins the integrity of that design... hence my suggestion.

Edit: Added an example for clarity.

we get your point, but we would love to keep the system as straight forward as possible.

You can make new ship designs for each hull. If you have say the 3CP attacker, and you create one with long range missles, and another with short range lasers, you can have two designs, one called Missle1 and the other Laser1 and upgrade them each as you get new techs. You do not have to stick with the default hull type names.

My idea/suggestion is about the situation where you want to retrofit your ship that was build using the Missle1 design to using the Laser1 design or vice versa.

As far as realism goes, I don't think it's realistic to imagine retrofitting a ship by replacing the whole hull.  In fact, it would be easier to build a whole new ship from scratch than to dismantle modules from an existing ship, then vastly modify, or replace entirely, the hull.

I could see there being a 'scrap yard' of sorts, such that some parts of the old ship are useful in some way, but considering that generally you retrofit with better weaponry, or at least weapons you desire more at the time, even those scraps would be fairly useless, though perhaps they could be sold on the marketplace?

I am not entirely sure what you are saying . To be clear you would not be replacing the entire hull, you would be replacing the modules with the upgrade/retrofit. That is you would only be able to upgrade to a Ship Design that has the same hull type as the ship you are upgrading. My suggestion will not change what you can upgrade/retrofit it will only make you able to assign a new Ship Design to which individual ships upgrade with the restriction of hull type still intact.

Ah, I see.  I misinterpreted.

Yes, I like your idea.  Will upvote.

good idea. Not sure if feasible, but I'll voted to ensure at least devs consider it.

And if the devs could also go back to Endless Legend and implement this feature in that game as well.

*fingers crossed*

It would be nice to have a drop-down menu for each ship's hull for a better organization of the ship design.

Also the automatic update of the ships class bothers me. For example the automatic update from CORVETTE to CORVETTE2 for me is stupid.
One should have the possibility to update its vessel to all available design of its class.

Another problem that should be fixed is the maximum name length, currently set to 8 letters.

This.

Just wanted to post this.

Especially with Vodyani and Arks in the game, this is a must have.

It somewhat encourages a highly repetitive pattern of making a fast ark, then changing it to industry ark, then perhaps changing it to mixed ark, then changing it again. And this fun happens everytime you make an Ark and it does NOT make for fun gameplay.

Benefits?

Faster turn times, more micro doable under short turn time limits.

Less suicuidal thoughts over playing vodyani.

I completely agree on this. I had too much games where i deleted a design because i had only one useless ship of it and i was forced to sacrifice it because no retrofitting was available anymore and it cost dust to leave it be. On a roleplay view, i can imagine that ingeneers can unscrew all modules and replace them with new one (as long as ship hull stays the same).

@SpaceTroll if by straight forward system you mean the tedious and painful system of changing the design direction of parts of your existing fleet I concur! :P

After some annoying fiddling with Mining Behemoth/Economic Behemoths (and some battle scouts in the early game) I should admit that this is worst design ever =\
