In this you can see: Size of your Empire (in particular Area of Influence and trading ways) and show status of  confessions with other Empires (by color).

Also on this map you can see: Number of Connections with Other Empires, count of Colonies and other useful information.

You can always turn off useless stats and Map UI in whole too.
