Certain buildings will either increase or decrease pollution on a planet/system. Pollution levels decrease approval and growth. The ecologists party hates pollution and has laws associated with lowering it. Could be an interesting challenge for The United Empire since they are so industry-based.

I'm sorry, but dear god no.  I remember a similar system back in the days of Civilization IV, and as much as I loved that game, I absolutely despised the pollution system.  I've seen it done in other games as well and I've never, not once gotten any enjoyment out of it.  It wasn't fun.  It wasn't interesting.  And it was just a PITA that was just better to leave out of the game altogether.  So, I'm sorry, but no.  A pollution system is something I never want to see again in any game, let alone this game.

EDIT:  Correction, there's only one game I've ever played where I feel they got away with a pollution system and that was Anno 2070.  But then again, it was a bit of a core mechanic due to the whole premise of the game being focused on ecology.  But other than that one game, I've always hated pollution systems.
