It seems important to monitor space for invading fleets. However, it is a pain to manually send out probes, and it would make more sense that you can set a ship to automatically send out probes (i.e., to monitor a region of space). The following implementation should be relatively simple for players to understand and utilize.
1. Send ship that has probe module to a system.
2. Choose “Monitor” command, which has UI that is same as sending out a probe.
3. Depending on the probe module, can send one-or-more probes in different directions.
4. Thereafter, the ship will continue sending probes, per (3).
5. It makes sense that (4) does not occur until the ship has its full complement of probes, so there is an adequate delay between the sending of probes.
For (5), if you were particularly keen on having current information from a specific direction, then you would send a single probe, so as to minimize the time before the ship had its full complement of probes, again.
Using this feature to monitor another player's territory might cause diplomatic tension. There probably needs to be a "Mutual Reconnaisance Agreement" that should be agreed to, which is essentially an agreement that the probes are being used as assurance against hostile activity, rather than a preliminary to an invasion.
