What research item to get out of the 'I can only travel on starlanes' situation?

I've explored as far as I can go on the 'star lanes'.

What's the trick for moving out of that? Is there more than one way to travel further than you can at the beginning of the game (along the white lines).

There is research that lets you travel between suns if the star lanes aren't fast enough, and then there is wormhole travel that is within your controlled territory.

What does 'warp' drive get you? And speed is not the issue, the issue is 'can't explore anymore because there are no more white lines connecting stars'.

If you're looking to go beyond the normal space lanes, the "Applied Casimer Effect" tech on the bottom tech branch will let you travel through wormholes. I usually try for that tech right after the two cheapest one on the right branch for added industrial and research strength.

Thank you!

You could also try the Vaulters faction. They have a special portal improvement that when built lets your ships travel instantly to any other system with the same improvement. So you could travel all the way across the galaxy in one turn without using wormholes. There is also no tech required for this improvement too (so you start with the ability to build it).

There is one limitation, the system with this improvement has to be owned by you (duh) and has to be in your influence area. On one game Horatio was right next to me and his influence was so big it covered up one of my systems and I was unable to warp to that system even though it had the portal improvement (I assume if your friends with open borders it won't matter though).

Another interesting thing I saw was that factions you had open borders with were also able to use your portals.

Do they need to be a Vaulters faction to use your portals (assuming open borders)? (I don't have Vaulters yet.)

Confidential to Idaho: I have to disagree with Griffon; I would not use the Vaulters until you are more experienced with the game!

I don't think they have to be Vaulters to use your portals, I was a custom Vaulters faction (and the only Vaulters affinity in that game) and I saw the AI using my portals (yes had open borders with them too).

Btw why not start with Vaulters? I guess it doesn't matter, but their affinity is my new favorite (was Sheredyn before).

I played with my brother - me being Vaulters and he was Sheredyn I think... (some kind of mech-researcher faction) I might be completely wrong and he was Sophons.... but none the less - when we had an open border treaty he could use my portals. so there is that.

They do have some unique mechanics (portals mostly) that make them a bit more complicated, but they aren't as bad as say, the Harmony.

I noticed it being mentioned, but when I played with them, I could not find the tech.

There is no research reqired, and on new systems you can build it at any time. among the last of the system upgrades usually.

Ok, apparently the pilgrims are NOT vaulters, vaulters are a DLC race only available to owners of dungeons of the endless (with a promise to unlock it for all sometime in the future)

this is why i could not find it.
