Noob here. Finally decided to give Endless Space a go. Don't have much time to play games nowadays (read: I have wife and kids). Used to play MoO and MoA to death. Was getting bored of Civ 5 finally, and Beyond Earth was boring pretty quickly. So I finally tried Endless Space. Yay steam.

I've picked the sophon affinity, got the 30% science bonus, and pretty much maxed out anything sciencey to the point of picking some dodgy detrimental penalties. I'm playing a little "see what its like" game. Small universe. One enemy. I think thats the default? Anyway. I'm just beginning to have fun. AI attacked me, blockaded some systems. I finally figured out how to build ships and now I've wiped out all of theirs and they are are suing for peace. To hell with that, I'll just finish off researching a few more weapons, build the siege ships I need, and go kill the guy.

Oh. Random event. +30% production costs for 20 turns. Your choice of -50% science for 20 turns, or -75% science for 20 turns but +15% science for your allies.

Really? That's what this game needs? You want to basically make research half speed and slow down my building. In a 4X game. We want to make a 4X game slower?

And best of all we recognize that some players want to max science, so we'll throw in a -50% science (ha ha!) event just for them.

May I suggest that this particular random event is (forget unbalanced) just not fun.

If you can read this post with the composure of Gary from The Thing, that'd be great.
