Go to the save folder, and use an extraction utility (I use 7-zip) to open the archive on the save file. Inside there is a file you can open with a text editor. Search that file for the tag.

Extendet note: I'm fiddling with a way to rate a system in one number.

My only interest is in early to midgame system quality, and I want to have a number bellcurving around Zero. For reasons of seed-mining, i will use values as seen by the Amoeba on gamestart, so Luxurys count for NetHappiness.

A suggestion (T5-Planets will be treated as nonexistant, thus missing):

Popcap/3 + NetHappiness/5, +1 for every t1-Planet, -2 for missing planets.

I tried about 30 Systems and was so far pleased with the results. (+20 wet dream, +10 empowering, +5 promising, 0 meh, -5 hardly works, -10 a burden, -20 stunningly horrid)

Fo constellation rating I would simply sum up the best eight systems.

So, I know this is somewhat outdated, but since the map editor doesnt really work so far, i did the crazy: Seed Mining

I tested 100 Galaxys (so far). I am only rating the constellation oneself starts in. The way I operationalised this is not perfect, but fast to use when seed-mining:

Rating works by the number of planets and their tier. For this purpose "[33333x]" means exactly five Planets of type desert or arctic, and no regards to planet six.

[<223xxx] then means that two planets must be tier 2 or lower, an additional planet must be tier 3 or lower, and the remaing three do not matter.

Next, there is anomalys: Again, my rating is simple: Planets which are needet to fulfill the given criteria cannot have red anomalys, and may only have orange anomalys that do not drop food or happines.

Therefore, a good early game system can be statet as:

[<1223xx]/[<1133xx]

In midgame, happiness has to be taken into account. Therefore i like to take ressources into account, and calculate the overall happiness modifyer of the required systems. Again, these cannot have red anomalys. Orange ones are countet though. (For example, a lava planet with permanent monsoon would be a "H-25". A terran garden of eden would be "H+20". And a Barren with microfactories and meta-entactogen would be a whopping "H+45").

Thus, for a midgame system to be considered good, "H>0" must ne the sum total of its happiness. It would then be written as follows:

[<22444x,H>0]

At last, sometimes i will specify for the players constellation the number of tier1 planets as "#t1", and the distribution of anomalys as #(G)/#(O)/#(R).

For example 7t1 would mean there are seven planets of type ocean, jungle or terran in the constellation, and 8/7/6 would mean that there are eight green anomalys, seven orange anomalies and six red anomalies.

So my presets are these:

- Spiral 8

- 6 Empires

- Size Huge

- Age Normal

- Difficulty Hard

- Speed Normal

And:

- No Balance

- Normal

- Average

- Many

- Normal

- medium

- Few

- Normal

- Average

Make sure these presets are met, or else the seeds wont have the expected results.

Now Type the seed number into the "use seed" field (and unchecked "use random seed" right above it ;-)

I testet all combinations of 12345678##.
I will comment some of the results, and there will be honourable mentions.

My personal criteria for a very good starting constellation are:

3*[<1223xx]/[<1133xx]

3*[<22444x,H>0]

Theses are met by seeds:

1234567821

6t1 and 17/2/1smiley: cool* *(only counting the best 8 systems)

Honourable Mentions of nice systems in the starting constellation:

1234567844 Birius: Huge, large and small ocean +3 Hydromiel

1234567845 Kionos: tiny ocean+workshop, small jungle, small Ocean+lowgravity, medium tundra+huygensrings & Oenthol: tiny ocean+eden, large barren+plattformYs

1234567876 Ursa: [12222,H+20] (5/0/0)

1234567877 Constellation: 16/4/5, 2*Eden

1234567884 Constellation: 4*Transvine, 3*MetaEntactogen, Quadus: H+35 ________<= where the weed blooms!! smiley: mrgreen

I'm fairly certain it does not. I always choose green as my color, and in both the link I posted and davea's science challenge, I've started in the same position that others have, despite them choosing a different color (I'm not 100% off the top of my head, but I think I saw other colors being used). I believe starting position is determined by player number (which would always be player 1 in single player).

Really? We should test that. It sounds like an interesting design choice.

Make sure you're playing as the Amoeba when you're writing your seeds, because they can see the entire map. And make sure you remember to keep all the variables (galaxy size, shape, age, number of empires) the same.

The starting seed and all variables are most easily visible with the save editor (see other thread). Later I plan to add the ability to edit the galaxy as well.

Wow, that's an oversight on my part.

Still, I don't really think it would nullify our goals - just make them more difficult. I could still put something together, though - I know enough Java code to write a program that will take inputs for those parameters and spit out a list of seeds. (I'm still open to assistance if anyone wants to help!)

So, sharing a world "seed" is not just as easy as in Minecraft smiley: stickouttongue You can't see these settings after you've started game. With luck they might have saved in the new game menu. I do not know if they do.

(About that i might have found a bug where they don't if you crash your game. Would indicate they save-on-exit, not save-on-startgame.)

No, I don't want plants ^__^

Just curious, has anyone got any good seeds you'd want to share? Haven't really seen any post like this yet so yea...

When we have an answer, edit it into the first post; if this is going to be the central thread for Seeds, it might be a good idea to have that information.

Oh god, I nearly died laughing.

Anyway, it sounds like we could easily create some system for classifying seeds; think of tags! Create a set of tags ("Balanced," "Difficult," "Interesting," etc) and give all identified seeds all of their tags. Then seeds can easily be sorted, and you won't have to worry about making hard decisions over whether a seed is Interesting or Balanced.

Of course, the question becomes, how do we put this together? Making a long list of each category with repeats wouldn't be very elegant. I could attempt to whip something up in Flash once we have a good list going?

True, it would be nice if it was sub-separated into types of seeds, e.g. interesting galaxies, unusually hard seeds, and crazy people insisting they saw jesus's face in the shape of the galaxy.

I would like to start a seed repository. Maybe we could start a project to map every seed seeing as they aren't infinite like Minecraft worlds.

Maybe we can get some seeds that create balanced maps for players who have serious problems with that?
