Endless Space is actually a Steamworks title, so it requires Steam and an account to run. We basically use it to deliver updates, cloud to store your saves, achievements, or even the multiplayer servers. Unfortunately, that is the only way to play the game (with Steam), but please note that you can switch to an "offline mode" and ignore the platform once you have downloaded the game and its updates.
