I think a large contributor to the linearity in combat is the lack of weapon variety. Particularly, the limit that makes missiles effective at long range, lasers at mid, and ballistics at melee. Weapon tech should be separated into missile, ballistic, and laser categories and there should be long, mid, and melee range options for all. Sure, missiles, could be better suited for long range, but as it stands any player focusing on military will have all three by end game. Really takes the feeling of picking a specialty away.
Also, adding different properties to weapons like disabling systems, damaging over time, etc would be nice.
