As it stands, many of the modules/abilities/etc given by various techs seem rather unrelated. For instance, ballistic defense is coupled with lasers, lava terraforming is coupled with cruiser hull, etc. Lasers, ballistic defense, hull type, etc, should have their own branches. As it stands, the tech tree is completely uninteresting and lacks much strategic choice from the player aside from choosing to go military, science, industry, and so on. For its many flaws, Sword of the Stars 2 has a much more robust tech system.
Not asking for completely Linear progression in techs, but I just don't feel that these unseemly pairings make much sense. Maybe separate techs that offer two benefits into their own techs, reorganize tech trees into more intuitive branches, and make research faster to compensate for the larger number of techs.
