How limited is the combt engine to the number of ships appearing?

Within game rules it should be possible for a battle between forty eight ships to occur based on twenty two CP through research and plus two for traits. Has anyone tried a silly battle like such? I have seen some twenty plus ship battles in MP with GC fleets.

What I am leading towards is that CP limits need to be raised but instead of just being flat out raised for the sheer sake of having more ships it should be implemented with stacking rules. What this means is that in order to field larger fleets they must be comprised of certain hull sizes to accomplish this. The primary failure of the current combat system is that there is no differentiation of ship classes during combat because hull size has no bearing beyond what you carry. As in, in a WW1/WW2 naval fleet destroyers tended to hash it out with their opposites looking for opportunities to torpedo larger ships, cruisers tended to flank with battle cruisers upping the ante, and battleship/dreadnaughts slugged it out with anyone silly enough to be in range. Air Craft carriers ended that aspect of warfare pretty quickly. Yet ES depiction of warfare is at best a recreation of sail powered warfare.

So while imparting the roles that various hull sizes would have had if we were trying to recreate the feel of ww1/ww2 naval warfare is well beyond easy I do think implementing stacking limits and such would be a way to add some flavor to combat and allowing for larger fleets. Its not much fun for me to see twenty odd fleets in a system where they only fight it out one by one. It makes it damn near impossible to build transport fleets and have them arrive in system where an enemy might/is because you cannot control which fleets meet first.

A really good area to bring this up would be the "Modding" sub-forum. If anyone will have the answers for you, it'll be the code-jockeys.

There's nothing in the moddable code that reveals a hard coded limit. You'll need one of the developers who worked on the core engine to answer this one I'm afraid.

Well thanks I almost started looking for something (to teach myself some understanding of ES code)

Nothing complicated, mostly basic XML. It's more about understanding the file structure and available scopes and variables (which you can get by perusing code and finding examples of how these are used elsewhere) than it is about coding. It's not anywhere near as daunting as it initially looks. Obviously a basic understanding of code/programming is a great start and will accelerate your efforts greatly, but even a complete novice could accomplish a basic mod.

XML is incredibly easy to read, which helps a lot.

As I recall, there was a 255 v 255 ship fight done in the beta. The engine just puts more groupings of ships together in a chain. You end up with two long lines of ships fighting each other.

my longest game ( 200 turns) i had 24 cp fleets, though i used no less than 16 of those on leviathan class ships, and rest on various supports - ive never fought higher than 10 on 10 unfortunately, ill have to try this one playthrough, ill record it for luls, only problem is i doubt ai's will e ver be able to or match fleets of that size or that ill find a player to try that with me :P
