Characteristic needs to display bubbles for uncolonised and unresearched planet types on the galaxy view in red, orange, yellow, whatever, just not grey.

That is all.

Hi,

I am not sure I understand what you are asking for. In the galaxy view, you can already see different types of circles representing the planets in the system:

  • Blue = Planet is colonised
  • Red = You cannot colonise - Need to research the planet type
  • Grey = You have researched the proper tech and you can colonise the planet

I think Sedlex is saying that they don't like the color gray??

Though, on this topic, I would like to see different colors used for enemy colonized planets. Say their empires color, or orange or something like that? I personally automatically associate that color with planets I own and it takes a double-take sometimes for me to realize my error.

I realise I wasn't clear - due to the inordinate amount of click induced frustration created by my latest game of endless space, my post was rather terse. Let me elaborate:

With a vanilla faction, galaxy view shows grey, blue and red light indicators for planets. This is perfect as is.

With a faction that has the "tolerant" characteristic, the same indicators are maintained. Tolerant, as a quick reminder, allows players to colonise any and all planets, albeit with a FIDS penalty until the relevant technology is unlocked (50% for one, 25% for two levels of tolerant). This results in a totally useless display on the galaxy level, as all planets appear as grey, i.e. colonisable.

Tolerant does not mean the player will settle indiscriminately however. It just provides more flexibility. I will still prioritise planets for which I have tech over others, except under some circumstances it would be unnecessary to elaborate here.

Arguably, maintaining the red light for planets corresponding to techs I don't yet have would be more useful than the current "all grey" approach. That way at least I could still select optimal systems from the galaxy overview instead of having to zoom in every solar system individually to make my choices (a finnicky process at best, and which can quickly become irritating).

Then again, maintaining red lights might mislead the starting player ("It's read, don't settle, I must have misunderstood what tolerant means"). What's needed, ideally, is some sort of intermediate indication, which is why I suggested yellow or orange, or whatever else. Maybe simply a darker shade of grey, even.

I hope that's clearer.

After playing a bit more, I've come to realise that there is sooooo much more wrong with tolerant than the colour coding...

Tolerant needs to be rethought. I'm suggesting a brain-storming session. Here are my suggestions - if other people make more, I will be collecting them in the first post for easy perusal and discussion:

(1) Tolerant level one: all planets may be colonised, with a FIDS penalty as currently applicable to tolerant 2. Tolerant level 2: penalties are the same, but all form of approval penalty is eliminated from the colonised planet. As long as there is a "tolerated" planet within a system, system happiness cannot rise above 50%. "Yeah, we're all in biodomes but hey, it's a living".

(2) Tolerant cost is reduced to 15/30. "Not only can I live on other planets, but look at all the other cool skills I can get!"

(3) Tolerant level one same as current level 2, tolerant level 2 ignores penalty attached to anomalies as an addition. "Man, I eat radiation for lunch."

(4) Tolerant cost dramatically reduced. Tolerant becomes: each point of population on a researched planet type in the system allows support of one population on an unresearched planet type in the same system. Tolerant level 2, if kept, becomes: each point of population etc. allows support of two on an unresearched planet type. "My man works in the methane pits on the Pisces V, but he knows his family is here when he needs it"

(5) Tolerant adds a reverse locust counter of the craven type, but that doesn't persist for other races. 50% reduces to 0% penalty by a rate of 1% per turn. "It's kinda hot here but I think I'm getting used to it".

I'm sure we can think of more. This lot took about five minutes.

Get thee storminge.

I would apreciate if planets that you get a penalty on was shown as orange in the galaxy view.

As for your suggestions, I like the reverse locust idea and reduction in approval penalty, but not completely removed.
