I have thought of quite a few UI improvements that I believe should be easy to implement and should enhance playability. These are just a few of my ideas:

1) Add totals to the top of the FIDS columns so you can see how changes to your tax rate impact your empire.

2) Icons for the next two queued items in production for each system (or three items, see #4 below

3) Highlight systems that have ships in hangars.

4) Decrease the size of the hangar column (this could allow for expansion of the production column and more queued items or the number of turns for each queued production item

Hopefully the file attachment worked properly...

The hanger bar definitely could be shrunken down a little. I've also seen a queue type list for the techs like the way buildings and ships currently are being floated around the forums and that sounds cool. It would cut down on the whole mis-click and lose all your selected techs problem.
