I've read enough sci-fi space battle stories to notice a trend. You'll often see the technologically inferior party somehow pull off a win, and in doing so, is able to salvage some sort of technology from the defeated party to use against them in the next battle.
I think it would be a good idea to someone implement that idea into endless space battles. If the party that has less research wins a battle, there is some sort of random research reward (eg, a few research points, to a (rare event) ship tech discovered in the salvage.

Also: There is already a faction trait that gives you research point for every cp you shoot down during battles. I believe the cravers e.g. have that ability.
