The most zoomed out view of the galaxy map should show empire borders and even system ownership (as coloured dots). Right now, it's pretty much useless to me, other than understanding the overall shape of the galaxy - most of the time, I spend the view point zoomed in enough to see the information you'd want to see (number of planets, ships, etc) - but that view is too zoomed in to get a really good view tactical view of the state of empires and borders.
I would absolutely like this! There should also be viewing options when the galaxy is zoomed out, eg. show names of systems on/off, show borders on/off, show biggest fleets on/off, etc.
How about alloing an option to toggle the HUD detail of systems while zoomed in also and allowing for a camera rotation of the galaxy POV. Sometimes it is hard to tell where my ship is because of the density of systems along with all of the system HUD information, so a transparency slider could also help to customize for each level of zoom.
