How to chart/explore other surrounding star systems

I think I may have missed something in the tutorial, because while I am enjoying the game so far, I have not been able to figure out how to move my scouts/colony ship anywhere away from my planet...(Embarrassing, right?) Help on how to expand would be greatly appreciated.

there will be a ship icon around ur systems if ships are orbiting them. you click on the ship icon and then choose which fleet (if more than one) u want to move then just click the destination

If the path to the star is red, (I assume this means I can't travel) how can I get to it?

The only paths you won't be able to travel are usually wormholes till you get the correct research. System strings change colour depending on who owns the star system on the other end, red strings don't mean you can't go down them

As already pointed out it's all about selecting your ship and clicking on a star. To travel through wormholes (the unstable strings) you have to research Cassimir Effect (Exploration & Expansion tech tree). Later on you can even travel between star systems without using the strings, if you have researched warp drive. Refer to the FAQ for more info. Thread closed/
