How do I initiate Warp travel?

The AI is constantly doing it to me, but all my ships seem to insist on lane/wormhole travel. How do I do it?

Sorry for the obvious question first, but do you have the tech for it?

If you do, it normally only kicks in if faster options aren't available. As it takes longer to move when not using the string or wormholes, even though the straight line to a place looks faster, something following the strings/wormholes will get you there a turn sooner, or so.

There is an over-ride for the pathfinding system, though. I'll look it up again to make sure, but I believe CTRL + Right Click will have your fleet go to the place you clicked on via free movement (warp) regardless of strings or wormholes.

Figure that free-move (warp) through empty space takes 2 movement points per distance whereas string movement takes 1.

Free moving won't be faster until you research the tech that gives +12 [greenarrow]. At which point your ships will find it faster to travel around wormholes (always) and ignore strings 90% of the time.

I have the Advanced Warp Fields bonus, my ships still won't make diagonal travel.

In that case, the game's pathfinding system is still seeing the strings and wormholes as faster routes of travel. As Draco said, research a few more techs that give the movement bonuses in their descriptions, and the game will start warp jumping you, or use the manual over-ride. Which, here is a quote from the devs on how the over-ride works:

• Modified the pathfinding algorithm. You can override the algorithm by holding the left shift key and right-clicking on the system(s) you want. If you have the warp drive technology, ctrl + right-click on a system will force a free movement to the selected system. Warp/wormhole movement displays blue dots. Free movement displays green dots.

Ctrl+Right Click does work, and the movement is very speedy, taking 2 turns what would otherwise be a 4 turn trip, but my ships still won't do it automatically.

There may still be bugs in pathfinding, although the 0.30.5 version is much better than previous. Is the 4 turn trip through wormholes by any chance?

Last I played, they'd skip over wormholes (even if the start was one and, and the destination the other, whereupon they'd be attacking a system) and the extra movement leftover would be wasted anyway.

Nope, straight simple line of four planets.

Please find a saved game or autosave where you see this; confirm it still happens when you reload the game; zip the game and attach it to a post; and let us know which fleet you plan to move to what location.
